An Affordable PCIe SSD

An Affordable PCIe SSD

A few weeks ago a very smart friend of mine sent me an email asking why we haven’t seen more PCIe SSDs by now. While you can make the argument for keeping SATA around as an interface with traditional hard drives, it ends up being a bottleneck when it comes to SSDs. The move to 6Gbps SATA should alleviate that bottleneck for a short period, but it is easy enough to put NAND in parallel that you could quickly saturate it as well. So why not a higher bandwidth interface like PCIe?

The primary reason appears to be cost. While PCIe can offer much more bandwidth than SATA, the amount of NAND you’d need to get there and the controllers necessary would be cost prohibitive. The unfortunate reality is that good SSDs launched at the worst possible time. The market would’ve been ripe in 2006 2007, but in the post recession period getting companies to spend even more money on PCs wasn’t very easy. A slower than expected SSD ramp put the brakes on a lot of development on exotic PCIe SSDs.

We have seen a turnaround however. At last year’s IDF Intel showed off a proof of concept PCIe SSD that could push 1 million IOPS. And with the consumer SSD market dominated by a few companies, the smaller players turned to building their own PCIe SSDs to go after the higher margin enterprise market. Enterprise customers had the budget and the desire to push even more bandwidth. Throw a handful of Indilinx controllers on a PCB, give it a good warranty and you had something you could sell to customers for over a thousand dollars.

OCZ was one of the most eager in this space. We first met their Z Drive last year:

The PCIe x8 card was made up of four Indilinx barefoot controllers configured in RAID http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ 0, delivering up to four times the performance of a single Indilinx SSD but on a single card. That single card would set you back anywhere between $900 $3500 depending on capacity and configuration.

With the SSD controllers behind a LSI Logic RAID controller there was no way to get TRIM commands to the data. OCZ instead relied on idle garbage collection to keep Z Drive owners happy. Even today the company is still working on bringing a TRIM driver to Z Drive owners.

The Z Drive apparently sold reasonably well. Well enough for OCZ to create a follow on drive: the Z Drive R2. This card uses custom NAND cards that would allow users to upgrade their drive capacity down the line. The cards are SO DIMMs populated with NAND, available only through OCZ. The new Z Drive still carries the hefty price tag of the original.

Ryan Petersen, OCZ’s CEO, hopes to change that with a new PCIe SSD: the OCZ RevoDrive. Announced at Computex 2010, the RevoDrive uses SandForce controllers instead of the Indilinx controllers of the Z Drives. The first incarnation uses two SandForce controllers in RAID 0 on a PCIe x4 card. As far as attacking price: how does $369 for 120GB sound? And it is of course bootable.

OCZ sent us the more expensive $699.99 240GB version but the sort of performance scaling we’ll show here today should apply to the smaller, more affordable card as well. Below is a shot of our RevoDrive sample:

The genius isn’t in the product, but in how OCZ made it affordable. Looking at the RevoDrive you’ll see the two SandForce SF 1200 controllers that drive the NAND, but you’ll also see a Silicon Image RAID controller and a Pericom PI7C9X130 bridge chip.

The Silicon Image chip is a SiI3124 PCI X to 4 port 3Gbps SATA controller. The controller supports up to four SATA devices, which means OCZ could make an even faster version of the RevoDrive with four SF 1200 controllers in RAID.

Astute readers will note that I said the Sil3124 chip is a PCI X to SATA controller. The Pericom bridge converts PCI X to a PCIe x4 interface which is what you see at the bottom of the card.

The Pericom PCI X to PCIe Bridge

Why go from SATA to PCI X then to PCIe? Cost. These Silicon Image PCI X controllers are dirt cheap compared to native PCIe SATA controllers, cheap jerseys and the Pericom bridge chip doesn’t add much either. Bottom line? OCZ is able to offer a single card at very little premium compared to a standalone drive. A standard OCZ Vertex 2 E 120GB (13% spare area instead of 22%) will set you back $349.99. A 120GB RevoDrive will sell for $369.99 ($389.99 MSRP), but deliver much higher performance thanks to you having two SF 1200 controllers in RAID on the card.

You’ll also notice that at $369.99 a 120GB RevoDrive is barely any more expensive than a single SF 1200 SSD, and it’s actually cheaper than two smaller capacity drives in RAID. If OCZ is actually able to deliver the RevoDrive at these prices then the market is going to have a brand new force to reckon with. Do you get a standard SATA SSD or pay a little more for a much faster PCIe SSD? I suspect that many will choose the latter, especially because unlike the Z Drive the RevoDrive is stupidly fast in desktop workloads.

If you’re wondering how this is any different than a pair of SF 1200 based SSDs in RAID 0 using your motherboard’s RAID controller, it’s not. The OCZ RevoDrive will offer lower CPU utilization than an on board software based RAID solution thanks to its Silicon Image RAID controller, but the advantage isn’t huge. The only reason you’d opt for this over a standard RAID setup is cost and to a lesser extent, simplicity.

What’s that Connector?

When I first published photos of the Revo a number of readers wondered what the little connector next to the Silicon Image RAID controller was. Those who guessed it was for expansion were right: it is.

Unfortunately that connector won’t be present on the final RevoDrive shipped for mass production. At some point we may see another version of the Revo with that connector. The idea is to be able to add a daughterboard with another pair of SF 1200 controllers and NAND to increase capacity and performance of the Revo down the line. Remember that Silicon Image controller has four native SATA ports stemming off of it, only two are currently in use.

An amateur car race and a party collide

An amateur car race and a party collide

SUMMIT POINT, W. Va. Heading west out of metro Washington early that Friday morning, they were just four friends with nothing more than a $500 car and a dream of racing. Well, plus a loaded RV, a cargo van, a U Haul trailer, a pickup truck, a spare motor, an engine crane, a jackstand, a full set of $150 high performance racing tires (plus two spares), four fireproof racing suits and helmets, assorted power tools, a couple of laptop computers, a WiFi hotspot, a barbecue grill and a cooler full of steaks, chicken, eggs and thick cut bacon.

Oh, and also: a standalone bar, three kegs of Fat Tire Amber Ale, one kegerator, 3 1/2 cases of canned beer (in case the kegs went dry), two cases of Fireball cinnamon whiskey, a stereo, a laser light show system, a dance cage, some neon spray paint and magic markers, several strands of outdoor lights, one men s scuba suit (complete with snorkel and mask), assorted neon wigs and various rave party themed costume paraphernalia.

Some 90 minutes later, as the caravan pulled into the paddock area of Summit Point Motorsports Park, each of the four members of team Vicious Regress ringleader Matt Bartlett, 43, of Washington; his girlfriend, Barbara Hale, 42, of Alexandria, Va.; his Washington neighbor, Max Self, 33; and Dale Cruickshank, 57, of Broadland, Va. had to be wondering, to varying degrees, just what in the holy creation they had gotten themselves into.

Were the four of them (none of whom had ever raced a single lap, whether in a racecar or any other motorized vehicle, in their lives) actually going to take turns getting behind the wheel of their stripped down, rave painted, 90 horsepower, four cylinder 1980 Chevy Monza or what was left of it after half the roof was cut away, the interior gutted and all unnecessary parts, such as the catalytic converter and muffler, removed and race for some 14 1 / 2 hours that weekend against another hundred or so fellow amateurs with similarly disposable cars on a real 2.2 mile racetrack with 22 turns?

It certainly appeared so.

Across this great land, on splendid weekends such as this, there are NASCAR races full of $300,000 ground rockets, hospitality tents, jam packed grandstands and network TV cameras.

And then there is the race our four intrepid heroes were heading to 24 Hours of LeMons (yes, that s LeMons with an o, pronounced like the fruit), which is essentially what NASCAR would be if you stripped away all the money, the pretensions and the fans, and added copious amounts of twisted humor and spot weld ingenuity.

This certainly seemed like a good idea when Matt hatched the idea as a self admitted midlife crisis endeavor back in the spring. A West Point grad who runs his own defense consulting business in Washington, he had run out of ways to satisfy his adventure jones after trying, and completing, every Tough Mudder and Venture Quest obstacle race in the mid Atlantic. That is until someone told him about the 24 Hours of LeMons circuit (motto: All it takes is a beater, some buddies and lots of big lapses in judgment! ), which happened to be coming to West Virginia in June.

Well, who wouldn t want to be a real racecar driver for a weekend?

He brought it up to me a couple months ago: Want to race a car? Barb recalled. The part I like is overcoming my fear and just doing it that sense of accomplishment. It could kill me, I guess. But anything can kill you, right?

The idea was intriguing on its face: The central concept of LeMons is that your car cannot be worth more than $500 before mandatory safety upgrades, tires and brakes. You race for 10 hours on Saturday and another 41 cheap jerseys / 2 on Sunday, and the car with the most laps at the end wins the grand prize of $1,500, paid out in nickels.

Picture a junkyard full of abandoned junkers. Now, picture those cars brought back to life, wearing Halloween costumes and racing around a track hundreds of times. And if you get black flagged for any improprieties, such as bumping another car or passing during a yellow flag, you get hit with any number of assorted hokey penalties from having to make a replica of your car out of Play Doh to being driven around the paddock to apologize to your fellow competitors while shrink wrapped to your roof.

Sounds fun and simple with an exceedingly favorable fun to cost ratio right? Where else can you have that much fun for an entire weekend for just $500?

But if it was really so cheap, then how on earth at the end of a weekend that saw team Vicious Regress limp the Monza valiantly around the racetrack 108 times, despite all sorts of mechanical calamities and her inherent unfitness for such labor, finishing 86th out of 97 entries before her engine died a noble death in a haze of white smoke and backfires did Bartlett s post race accounting arrive at a total financial outlay of $9,174.43?

Well, you can start with the rave party.

From a single race in 2006 at Altamont (Calif.) Motorsports Park the brainchild of a local auto journalist named Jay Lamm the 24 Hours of LeMons circuit has grown to include, in 2013, a total of 19 events in 12 states.

In that inaugural race, there were 33 cars and 165 drivers, most of them Lamm s buddies. But by 2012, the LeMons races attracted around 2,900 cars and 8,900 drivers. (At $500 to register a car at each race, plus a $100 fee per driver, with a minimum of four required, it adds up to a nifty profit.)

The fear of failure and humiliation has kept 99 percent of car nuts away from traditional racing, Lamm said, explaining the race s appeal. By practically guaranteeing failure and humiliation, LeMons has pretty much taken the sting from it.

LeMons races have become so popular, in fact, that Lamm whose official title is Chief Perpetrator and his staff have to be selective in regards to whom they let in. The racetracks can only accommodate so many cars. So what gets your application past the organizing committee and your hooptie to the starting line? Creativity and fun. Which is to say, a good theme.

Somewhere along the way, the LeMons circuit became a traveling Halloween show, where, that weekend at Summit Point, a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse decorated to look like a turtle (team name: Turtle Eclipse of the Heart ) might go wheel to wheel with a 1971 Sea Sprite boat mounted to a Chevy S 10 pickup chassis and a 1999 Subaru Forester done up as a school bus.

Matt and Barbara quickly decided on their theme: a rave party. Their paddock would morph at night into a rave, complete with a dance floor, a handmade dance cage, a fully stocked bar, a laser light system and loud, pulsating music. Oh, and somewhat incongruously a scuba suit.

I was at a rave once, Matt explained, and some guy was wearing a scuba suit. I thought it was the funniest thing I d ever seen. Once we decided to do this, I knew I had to get a scuba suit.

Their team name would be Vicious Regress, an obscure philosophy concept the meaning of which Matt defines as the solution to the problem is the problem itself. For example, the solution to a hangover is to keep drinking.

Their application sailed through. As for their utter lack of racing experience, that was hardly viewed as a negative.

Beginners aren t as bad as guys that know enough to get in trouble, explained rules official Judge Phil Greden, who serves as Chief Justice of LeMons Supreme Court. The worst drivers are the ones with enough skills to get going really fast before they wipe out.

From a starting point of $200, the price of the Monza, the costs soon started to rise exponentially.

Matt is an occasional car tinkerer who, in 2002, rebuilt a 1973 Land Rover Series 3 109. He paid $305 for a Holly carburetor and installed it himself. The sign http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ up costs for the LeMons race came out to nearly a grand. Since the Monza had been raced in a LeMons race before, he thought he had a free pass on all the safety equipment.

An affordable vacation on Maui’s Hana Highway

An affordable vacation on Maui’s Hana Highway

MAUI, Hawaii It all came back to me when a mud splattered pickup with giant tires fishtailed from around a tight bend ahead. My breath sucked in with an audible whoosh as our fenders air kissed like starlets at a Hollywood premiere.

Fleeting thought: Maybe I should have popped for the full damage waiver at the car rental counter.

This was Maui’s road to Hana, 50+ miles that has long been fabled among tourists for being as bendy as a garter snake with cramps. One lane bridges? Enough to give a Formula One driver a permanent nervous tic.

But it had been well more than a decade since I’d last driven it. With my mainlander’s view of how “progress” inevitably straightens roads, I was braced on a recent visit for the adventure to have been tamed out of the Hana Highway.

But plenty of thrill ride remains, replete with blind curves, crumbling bridges, Tarzan vines hanging from above and many spots where the centerline just disappears without warning because, well, the road’s too skinny for two cars.

Embrace it. Shut off the AC and open your windows to savor the heady aromas of wild jasmine and rotting guavas. Relish views of jungle waterfalls, lava rock coast and swaying palms while you keep your eyes peeled and fingers crossed.

Many make the mistake of white knuckling the round trip drive to the little town of Hana on Maui’s fabulously scenic wetter side in a single day instead of staying overnight. Even the most fun loving motorist can end http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ up with a vacant stare. With rooms for two starting at $450, it’s not for everyone’s budget. So I set out to find the cheaper side of Hana.

Here’s a roundup of tips on where to stay, where to eat and what to do without emptying your wallet.

Airbnb and online vacation rental sites have opened up Hana’s lodging market.

But don’t stop there. On VRBO, I found a modest room in a local family’s back garden for $87 a night plus tax, a wild bargain no matter where in Hawaii. (Pay $11 more for a full kitchen; sorry, no credit cards.) It was nothing fancy, but it was as clean and well equipped as a Super 8 with a riotous garden of torch ginger outside the door. Among dozens of campsites including many with ocean views I saw only one tent camper when I visited in October. Included are picnic tables, barbecue grills and vault toilets. Bring your own water jugs, which can be refilled at the visitor center. First come, first served.

Braddah Hutt’s BBQ Grill, off the highway just south of Hana, draws you in with sweet smelling smoke wafting across the road as you drive through a tunnel of Cook Island pines. Chicken plate $11, fish tacos for $8.

Da Chow Wagon, just south of Hana’s only gas station, is a good place for classic Hawaiian dishes such as loco moco (beef patty topped with fried egg and gravy, on rice), $10; or catch of the day, $14.

In town, there’s also the Surfin’ Burro trailer (burritos), and for dessert, Shaka Pops, a stand that sells fruit packed ice pops in flavors such cheap jerseys as strawberry banana and ginger.

Lunch at the beach? Head 1.5 miles south and turn toward the ocean on Haneo’o Road. The first sand you’ll come to is Koki Beach, popular with surfers. As the road curves you’ll see a cement block barbecue where locals take turns fixing and selling lunch. For $10, I got a big plate of kalua pork with sides of rice and macaroni salad from David and Ilona Phillips.

Come to Koki Beach around dawn, David advised, to see locals fish with nets and catch lobsters.

Sated with carbs and salty pork? Stop by the Hana Fresh tent at Hana Health Center, 4590 Hana Highway. Not only do they sell lots of fresh produce, but the smoothies are a bit of tropical, icy heaven: mango, passion fruit and pineapple blended with coconut water, $7.

If you rent a place with a kitchen (good idea!), two Hana stores sell groceries: historical Hasegawa General Store, 5165 Hana Highway, and the Hana Ranch Store, 1 Mill St. Both have limited inventory and steep prices. To save money, shop in Kahului (Safeway, Costco) before heading east.

The other Hana Highway budgeteer’s treasure: roadside fruit stands. Here’s where to find the ripest papaya for a buck or two.

Take another drive

This might sound crazy after spending your day in the car to get to Hana, but the next day you’ll want to see more. This side of the island only gets more junglelike as you tour the shore south of Hana. Pack a lunch and the day won’t cost you more than gas and the $15 admission to Haleakala National Park.

Here you benefit from the Hawaii law that every beach is public. Since the Travaasa Hana resort isn’t on a beach, this is where the hotel shuttles its guests. They have exclusive access to some dressing rooms and showers, but there are public restrooms, too. And everyone gets to use the well built stone stairway leading to the beach.

After a wade, continue south on the highway, which gets bumpier and narrower. Signs recommend 5 mph on some turns as you tunnel beneath thick canopies of monkeypod and breadfruit trees.

An air of optimism at Lebanon Valley Speedway

An air of optimism at Lebanon Valley Speedway

Driving past Lebanon Valley Speedway, you can smell summer love in the air: a swirling mix of dirt track, burning rubber and $1.50 hot dogs.

If you’ve never been to the half mile oval, it’s difficult to understand the aphrodisiac. But to those who count the days until racing season, the combination of grease and guts is enough to attract crowds even during a season that begins with gas prices surpassing $3.40 a gallon.

While many local businesses face tough times economically, Speedway owner Howard Commander said high gas prices and less disposable income among patrons mean the 2008 racing season could produce the biggest crowds and highest profits ever at the stock car track, which began its 57th season last night.

“During the last energy crisis in 1976 through 1978, we had our best years,” Commander said. “People couldn’t take big vacations, so they discovered our track. And there’s no greater event than a $10 race and $1.50 hot dogs.”

Pittsfield resident Amy Norkus, 28, discovered the affordable, one of a kind experience as a young girl, watching her father race. To her, there is nothing like rowdy fans, track level access and dirt cheap food.

“Fans are yelling and jumping up and down, fighting to get close seats,” said Norkus, who went to the track every weekend as a girl to watch her father race. “It’s unlike anything else. And you can go down on the infield and get food from the stands.

“You’d think food coming out of these wooden shacks wouldn’t be good. But it’s great, and wicked cheap. You just have to eat it on the way back to your seat so it cheap jerseys doesn’t get covered in dirt.”

A day at Lebanon Valley Speedway, which draws more than 300,000 fans annually, Commander said, provides several similar, free life lessons, including: Don’t wear white at a venue that has swirling dirt. Sunglasses can double as protective goggles. And do not, do not sit in another fan’s “usual” spot.

“This is our spot, and people get really mad if you sit in their spot,” said Stacey Dempsey, wife of pro stock driver Rick Dempsey, sitting with her three children in the family’s habitual first turn bleacher seat. “People come week after week. And tonight there are a lot of people here. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it this crowded.”

Jeff Watson, a 24 year old driver from Sheffield, said he has seen empty bleachers at Lebanon Valley, but only when it rains. He has watched the popularity of the speedway grow since he was a year old.

“People come week after week to cheer on their favorite driver,” said Watson, who has won back to back division championships in the block modified division. “And for someone who’s never seen a race before, it’s our own little world.”

With 30 to 50 racetracks operating in New England on a weekly basis, excitement for the 2008 season at Lebanon Valley was palpable yesterday. The track will feature 23 weekends of speed events and two special midweek programs, a demolition derby and a monster truck rally.

Bob Lang, Northeast division director of the National Hot Rod Association the track’s governing body said he travels to Lebanon Valley Speedway for Fourth of July events every year.

“It gets a good crowd on an average weekend, but for special events, they can fill the place up,” Lang said. “In that area of New York and Western Massachusetts, it’s one of the only (NHRA) tracks, and it’s a popular place.”

Lang said the financial success of a track is dependent upon several factors, including fan loyalty, the weather and the economy.

“I’d say (Lebanon Valley Speedway) has grown over the years, but it’s all relative to the economy,” he said. “When the money is flowing, people travel far away. When it’s not, more people stay closer to home and spend their entertainment money closer to home.”

Commander said crowds and track facilities are constantly improving. Last year, he invested in a new clay surface on the oval to make the racing pad about 6 inches thick.

Commander said he puts $250,000 in improvements into the track for each season. This year, in addition to fresh paint and the 300 to 400 bleachers that are replaced annually, new bathroom facilities will be installed at the main dragway building.

Commander said he’s looking forward to strong attendance figures, which net the track “millions of dollars” each year and depend heavily on weather patterns.

In 2006, the speedway and dragway lost 40 events because of rain.

“We didn’t make anything that year,” Commander said.

Last year, rain forced the cancellation of only nine events.

“I wait all year for racing season to start,” Szesnat, 35, said. “It’s so exciting. And (Commander) runs a great family business here. An affordable housing complex is under construction in downtown Orlando

Atlantic Housing Partners has started work on the first affordable housing development in downtown Orlando since the recession.

Located at Hughey Avenue and West Concord Street, immediately west of Interstate 4, Lexington Court will have 104 units in four stories. Monthly rents are expected to be in the mid $700 range far below the going rate for the downtown area.

The relatively low cost apartment project follows the construction of several market rate http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ complexes downtown. The average rent for the downtown area was $1,206 during the first quarter, according to Real Data Apartment Index. Asking rents are more than $2,200 monthly for several premium units at the new SkyHouse midrise, which is next to the Orange County Courthouse.

Pricing for Lexington Court will fluctuate with the area’s median income.

“Our goal is to provide high quality rental housing in a downtown location near public transportation at an affordable price point,” said Lori Trainer, vice president of corporate public relations for Southern Affordable Services Inc.

Bill O’Dell, director of the University of Florida’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies, said the area of downtown just west of I 4 has a significant share of affordable housing but that the new SunRail commuter line creates opportunities for affordable rentals.

“If your question is whether the downtown Orlando area needs additional affordable housing, the answer is absolutely especially if that housing is being built in relative proximity to new SunRail stations or otherwise serviced by Lynx transit,” O’Dell said.

The Shimberg Center is expected to complete a cheap jerseys report in the next month on affordable housing and SunRail for the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council.

Atlantic Housing Partners LLP is the developer, CPG Construction is the general contractor and Southern Affordable Services is a partner on the project.

Concord Management Ltd. is marketing Lexington Court for its proximity to the rail system, which runs from south Orlando to DeBary. The new project will be about a third of a mile from the SunRail station on Amelia Street. Other marketing points include a fitness center and clubhouse.

Concord Lexington LLC purchased the 2.07 acre site in September for $1.25 million from OCP Land LLC. Concord’s managers include Paul Missigman, Scott Culp and Tricia Doody, all of Winter Park.

Financing for the project included $21.09 million of tax credits issued through the Florida Housing Finance Corp. Southern Affordable Services was unable to confirm details about the credits.
